Calexico plays great benefit show for Rep. Giffords

Calexico's Joey Burns with band

TUCSON -- Calexico and Mariachi Luz de Luna played an excellent benefit show downtown at the Rialto last night for Gabrielle Giffords for Congress.

My wife and I had a good time. The band really pumped out the sound, with 15 musicians on the stage at times.

Nice job by all the organizers having a meaningful political event that was also fun and artistic.

And, as everyone knows, in Tucson when it rains it pours. Daniel and I also dropped by the Wingspan awards dinner. The silent auction was just incredible. I'm a development director of a non profit, and I have to say Wingspan's silent auction was just top-notch. By the end of the Calexico concert, we were just to spent to make it over to the All Souls' Benefit at Nimbus--but be sure to stop by the Puppet Works workshops to make sugar skulls, a fabulous mask, or work on a float. The best event of the year here is just around the corner: dia de los muertos parade, aka all souls procession.
