Rep Patterson urges Congress keep Tucson PO open
Tucson's Cherrybell Post Office in LD29
STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Today Rep. Daniel Patterson, D-Tucson (LD29/LD3) sent a letter to U.S. Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl expressing concern over the proposed closure of the Cherrybell Mail Processing and Distribution Center in Tucson.
In the letter, Patterson indicates the closure would result in the loss of 147 jobs and would create a $14 million void in the local economy.
"The over one million people in Tucson and Southern Arizona deserve good daily mail service. Sending all our mail through Phoenix makes no sense, and would harm business, elections and jobs," Patterson said.
Additionally, Patterson said the closure will cause a delay in postal service, a nearly 20 percent increase the postal rate for 23,000 businesses and a mail rate increase of up to 48 percent for nonprofits.
Patterson urged Congress to consider an alternative solution to resolving the United States Postal Service fiscal problem because the Cherrybell Post Office is too important to the local economy.
"To protect public services, commerce and jobs, Tucson's important Cherrybell Post Office must stay open. We thank Rep. Grijalva for his action and we call on Senators McCain and Kyl to help stop the bad closure decision by the federal government now."
